New Synagogue in Mainz

In 1999 the cologne based architect Manuel Herz won the competition for the new synogoge which, as an additional building for the city Mainz, seems to be more a sculpture than a construction building. The form of the synagogue is a built translation of the hebrew word “Quadushah” (sanctification) that creates the basis for the whole design, giving every detail a special contentual depth and significance.
